Bioassays were used to study the infectivity of cytoplasmic polyhedrosis viruses (CPVs), nuclear polyhedrosis viruses (NPVs) and entomopoxviruses (EPVs) contained in 16 nests of the paper waspPolistes hebraues F. in Réunion Island. Several virosis were propagated from 6 nest contents in 5 Lepidoptera:Catopsilia thauruma Saalmüller,Catopsilia florella F.,Callixena versicolora Mabille,Polydesma umbricola Boisduval andEagris sabadius Boisduval. Each of the previous species supported the development of one or two virosis and therefore, wasp nests must be considered as accumulating centres where infectivity of occluded entomoviruses is preserved. The accurate origin of the virosis propagated through bioassays was searched for using ecological investigations on similar natural diseases, REN analysis and a cross-transmission test onSpodoptera mauritia Boisduval. The nuclear polyhedrosis and one cytoplasmic polyhedrosis appearing in bioassays can be assigned respectively to viruses produced byC. thauruma andC. versicolora; the other virosis must be considered as developing in alternate or substitution hosts. Wasp nests could therefore be used to detect the presence of specific viruses in an environment and to collect new virus isolates.  相似文献

Abstract Grassland birds have declined more than any other North American habitat-associated bird community. Because most species of grassland birds evolved within heterogeneous landscapes created by the interaction of fire and grazing, traditional rangeland management that promotes homogeneity, including annual dormant-season burning combined with early-intensive grazing, might be partly responsible for these declines, especially in some regions of the Great Plains, USA. Recently, an alternative grassland management practice known as patch-burning has been promoted as a means of restoring heterogeneity to grasslands by mimicking the grazing-fire interaction that once occurred on the prairie before European settlement. From 2003 to 2004, we examined effects of patch-burning and traditional management (annual burning followed by early-intensive grazing) on the reproductive success of dickcissels (Spiza americana) in tallgrass prairie in Oklahoma. We monitored 296 dickcissel nests and found that dickcissel nesting phenology differed between traditional and patch-burned pastures. Specifically, dickcissels tended to initiate their nests later in the traditional pasture. Mean number of eggs laid and fledglings produced were similar between the treatments, but nest densities were higher in traditional pastures. Predation was the predominant cause of nest failure and was higher in traditional pastures than in patch-burned pastures. Brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater) parasitism was higher in traditional pastures than in patch-burned pastures. Overall, dickcissel nest success was higher in patch-burned pastures than in traditional pastures. The positive response of dickcissel nest success to patch-burn management provides further evidence that this practice can be a useful tool for grassland bird conservation. By creating a mosaic of different stature vegetation, patch-burn management enhances productivity of grassland bird species by providing a refuge area in the unburned patches that affords dickcissels and other nesting grassland birds some protection from the direct (e.g., trampling) and indirect (e.g., cowbird parasitism and predation) effects of grazing, which are not available under traditional management. Patch-burn management should be encouraged as a conservation strategy for grassland birds throughout the Great Plains.  相似文献

Effects of ambient temperature on avian incubation behavior   总被引:6,自引:1,他引:5
Ambient temperature is commonly thought to influence avian incubation behavior. However, results of empirical studies examining correlationsbetween ambient temperature and bout duration are equivocal. We propose that these equivocal results can be partly explainedby developing a conceptual understanding of how we should expecttemperature to influence incubation. We demonstrate why linearcorrelation analyses across a wide range of temperatures canbe inappropriate based on development of an incubation model for small birds that incorporates how ambient temperature influencesboth embryonic development and adult metabolism. We found supportfor predictions of the model using incubation data from orange-crownedwarblers (Vermivora celata) in Arizona. Both off- and on-boutduration were positively correlated with ambient temperaturebetween 9° and 26°C, but unrelated to ambient temperature<9° and 26-40°C. Bout durations declined as ambienttemperature approached or exceeded 40°C. Incubating orange-crowned warblers appeared to avoid bouts off the nest <7 min andbouts on the nest <20 min. Time of day, duration of theprevious bout, and variation among nests all explained variationin both on- and off-bout duration. Although we found supportfor the general shape of the incubation model, temperature still explained only a small portion of the overall variation in on-and off-bout duration. Results of previous studies were generallyconsistent with the model for off-bout duration; most studiesin colder environments reported positive correlations withtemperature, and the one negative correlation reported was from a hot environment. However, the relationships between on-boutduration and temperature reported in previous studies wereless consistent with our model and our data. Although somediscrepancies could be explained by considering our model, some studies reported negative correlations in cold environments. The effect of ambient temperature on duration of on-bouts probablydiffers among species based on the amount of fat reserves females typically carry during incubation and the extent of male incubationfeeding. Additional studies of the effects of temperature onavian incubation will help improve the general model and ultimatelyaid our understanding of energetic and ecological constraintson avian incubation.  相似文献

In 1965, Hamilton and Orians (HO) hypothesized that the starting point for the evolution of obligate interspecific brood parasitism in birds was the facultative laying of physiologically committed eggs in neighbouring active nests of con‐ and heterospecifics, following predation of a bird’s own nest during the laying stage. We tested this prediction of the HO hypothesis by using captive pairs of zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), a species with evidence for intraspecific parasitism both in the wild and in captivity. As predicted, in response to experimental nest removal, subjects laid eggs parasitically in simulated active conspecific nests above chance levels. Across subsequent trials, we detected both repeatability and directional change in laying patterns, with some subjects switching from parasitism to depositing eggs in the empty nest. Taken together, these results support the assumptions and predictions of the HO hypothesis, and indicate that the zebra finch is a potential model species for future behavioural and genetic studies in captive brood parasite research.  相似文献

Gray Flycatchers (Empidonax wrightii) breed in a variety of habitats in the arid and semi‐arid regions of the western United States, but little is known about their breeding biology, especially in the northern portion of their range where they nest in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests. From May to July 2014 and 2015, we conducted surveys for singing male Gray Flycatchers along the eastern slope of the Cascade Range in Washington, U.S.A, monitored flycatcher nests, and quantified nest‐site vegetation. We used a logistic‐exposure model fit within a Bayesian framework to model the daily survival probability of flycatcher nests. During the 2 yr of our study, we monitored 141 nests, with 93% in ponderosa pines. Mean clutch size was 3.6 eggs and the mean number of young fledged per nest was 3.2. Predation accounted for 90% of failed nests. We found a positive association between daily nest survival and both nest height and distance of nest substrates from the nearest tree. Flycatchers that locate their nests higher above the ground and further from adjacent trees may be choosing the safest alternative because higher nests may be less exposed to terrestrial predators and nests in trees that are farther from other trees may be less exposed to arboreal predators such as jays (Corvidae) that may forage in patches with connected canopies. Nests in trees farther from other trees may also allow earlier detection of approaching predators and thus aid in nest defense.  相似文献

Increasing nest survival by excluding predators is a goal of many bird conservation programs. However, new exclosure projects should be carefully evaluated to assess the potential risks of disturbance. We tested the effectiveness of predator exclosure fences (hereafter, fences) for nests of critically endangered Florida Grasshopper Sparrows (Ammodramus savannarum floridanus) at a dry prairie site (Three Lakes; 2015–2018) and a pasture site (the Ranch; 2015–2016) in Osceola County, Florida, USA. We installed fences at nests an average of 8 days after the start of incubation, and nest abandonment after fence installation was rare (2 of 149 installations). Predation was the leading cause of failure for unfenced nests at both sites (48–73%). At Three Lakes, nest cameras revealed that mammals and snakes were responsible for 61.5% and 38.5% of predation events, respectively, at unfenced nests. Fences reduced the daily probability of predation (0.016 for fenced nests vs. 0.074 for unfenced nests). The probability that a fenced nest would survive from discovery to fledging was more than double that of unfenced nests (60.4% vs. 27.7%). However, we found no difference in daily nest survival at the Ranch between the year before nests were fenced (2015; 0.874) and the year when all but one nest were fenced (2016; 0.867) because red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) were responsible for 86% of predation events at fenced nests at the Ranch. The use of cameras at fenced nests revealed that site‐specific differences in nest predators explained variation in fence efficiency between sites. Our fence design may be useful for other species of grassland birds, but site‐specific predator communities and species‐specific response of target bird species to fences should be assessed before installing fences at other sites.  相似文献
